Questions

Our work — common questions

Can I see photographs of jobs EA Paint has actually done?

Ask and we will send them, along with two references in your own town that you can telephone. The photographs published on this page are labelled for what they are, and we would rather show you nothing than pass off a stock photo of somebody else's house as our work — which, in this trade, happens more than it should. A portfolio you cannot verify is worth exactly as much as a review you cannot trace.

Do you take before-and-after photographs?

Yes, and the before ones are the useful ones. A finished wall looks the same whoever painted it; what separates a job that lasts from one that fails is the rotted sill that was replaced, the chalk that was washed and bound, the knot that was spot-primed before the topcoat. Those are the photographs worth asking any contractor for, because they show the part that gets skipped.

Can I visit a job in progress?

Usually, with the homeowner's agreement — and it tells you more than any photograph can. What a site looks like at four in the afternoon on day three is the honest picture of how a contractor works: whether the floors are covered, whether the cut lines are straight before they are touched up, whether the tools are put away. Ask us and we will arrange it if we have something running near you.

Question not here? Ask it on the phone.

How long does a typical house painting job take?

A full exterior on an average Central Massachusetts colonial runs about one to two weeks, weather permitting; a few interior rooms is two to four days; a kitchen of cabinets is roughly a week with the doors sprayed off site. The variable is almost never the painting — it is how much preparation and wood repair the house turns out to need, which is why the estimate is written after someone has looked at it rather than over the phone.

What time of year is best for exterior painting in Massachusetts?

Late spring through to mid-autumn. Modern exterior coatings need surface temperatures above about 50°F to cure properly, and in Central Massachusetts that reliably means May to October, with September and early October often the best of it — low humidity, stable temperatures, and the wood dry after the summer. Interior work, cabinets and carpentry run year-round.
