Exterior House Painting in Northborough, MA

A New England exterior fails at the wood, not at the color. We scrape it, repair it, prime it and then paint it — which is why the job is still holding four winters later.

Wash, scrape, sand, prime — in that order

The house is washed to pull off chalk, pollen and mildew. Every failing edge is scraped back to sound material and feather-sanded so you cannot read the old paint line through the new coat. Bare wood is spot-primed the same day it is exposed, before it can take on moisture.

The rot gets fixed before the paint goes on

This is the part most painters hand off to somebody else. Soft sills, split clapboard, blown-out corner boards and rotted rake ends get replaced by the same crew, on the same job, at a price that is on your estimate up front. Paint over rot and you buy two more years. Replace it and you buy twenty.

Worth a look before you commit to anyone.

Caulk, coat and protect the site

Joints, butt seams and casing edges are caulked with a paintable elastomeric that moves with the wood. Shrubs, walkways, decks, windows and cars are covered. Chips are collected off the ground at the end of every day, and on a pre-1978 house the work area is contained and cleaned up rather than left on the lawn.

What it costs

Anybody who gives you a price for exterior painting over the phone, sight unseen, is guessing — and the guess is usually low so they can raise it later. The three things that actually move the number are the size of the job, the condition of what is already there, and how much repair work is hiding under the surface.

So we come look. The visit is free, it takes about thirty minutes, and you get an itemized written estimate with a fixed price you can hold us to. If a comparison quote comes in lower, bring it to us — we will tell you honestly what is missing from it.

Thirty minutes on site is all it takes to give you a fixed number.

Questions

Exterior Painting — common questions

When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Massachusetts?

Late April through early November. Modern acrylics need surface temperatures above roughly 50°F and a dry surface, and fall in Central MA gives you the lowest humidity of the year. The best exterior slots in Northborough get booked by March, so an early estimate is worth it.

How often does a house in Central MA need repainting?

Clapboard and trim typically go 7–10 years, cedar shingles longer, south- and west-facing walls shorter. What ends a paint job early is almost always failed caulk or wood that stayed wet — both of which we address as part of the prep.

Can you paint vinyl siding?

Yes, with vinyl-safe coatings that will not hold heat and warp the panels. There are real limits on how much darker you can go than the original color, and we will tell you where that line is before you commit.

Still have a question? Ask it on the phone — you will get a straight answer.
