What we see on Stow houses

Stow splits almost in half by age. About 618 of its 2,820 homes — more than a fifth — were already standing in 1939, and another quarter have been built since 2000. The decades in the middle contributed far less. the midpoint of the housing stock sits at 1975, but that midpoint describes very few actual houses here.

That means the first question on any Stow estimate is simply which Stow we are looking at. An orchard-era farmhouse and a 2008 colonial a mile apart need different preparation, different expectations and different conversations about how long the result will last. Quoting one as though it were the other is how people end up unhappy.

Eighty-three percent of units are single-family and about eighty-five percent of households own rather than rent, so this is overwhelmingly owner-occupied work. Lots are large and the town is rural, which means long drives, mature trees near the houses and staging that has to be planned rather than assumed.

On the old half, expect layers. A house that has stood since before 1940 has been painted many times, and what is under the top coat decides whether the job is a wash and two coats or something slower.

What to watch for on a Stow house

  • The 35-foot vegetative buffer, which is Stow's own rule and stricter than the state's. The town's wetlands regulations require an undisturbed strip of naturally occurring plant material at least 35 feet wide beside all wetlands, water bodies and watercourses, with jurisdiction reaching 100 feet from wetlands and 200 feet from perennial streams, rivers and ponds. It rarely stops a repaint; it decides where equipment, material and washing runoff can sit.
  • Colour, which no one in Stow reviews. The town has an advisory Historical Commission under Chapter 40 section 8D and no adopted local historic district - a study committee has been looking at one for Gleasondale Village, but nothing has been adopted. There is also no demolition-delay bylaw and no construction-hours bylaw here.
  • Farmhouse additions. A building that has grown over a century usually has three or four different substrates on one elevation — original clapboard, a 1950s addition, a 1990s ell. They weather at different rates and take coatings differently, and treating the wall as one surface is the usual reason a repaint looks patchy by year three.
  • The post-2000 quarter, which is at the opposite end of the problem. Those houses have sound wood and failing sealant. Window perimeters and trim joints are the whole job if it is caught at the right moment.
  • Shade. Stow is rural with mature growth close to many houses, so north and east elevations stay damp long after rain. Mildew starts there, and clearing what touches the wall helps more than another coat ever will.

Lead paint and the age of Stow housing

About 58% of Stow's homes predate 1980, so on most jobs here the age of the house decides how the work runs before anything else does. Federal law treats housing built before 1978 as lead-bearing, and disturbing paint in one means contained prep, HEPA extraction and wet methods rather than dry scraping. It is slower and it is not optional. Ask any contractor bidding your job how they intend to handle it — the answer tells you a great deal.

How far Stow is, and what that means

Stow is about 10 miles from Northborough — about 25–30 minutes out. That is inside the radius the whole company is built around: close enough that the crew starts on time, comes back the next day, and can stop by after the job to look at something. Estimates here are free and there is no minimum.

Why Stow homeowners hire one company for both

The single most common way an exterior job in Central Mass goes sideways is discovering rot after the staging is up. Then you are calling carpenters, waiting three weeks, paying two mobilization fees and watching the weather window close.

Because EA Paint & Light Carpentry, Inc. is set up for light carpentry as well as painting, that whole detour disappears. The soft sill, the split clapboard, the blown-out corner board — found at the estimate, priced at the estimate, repaired by the same crew that paints it.

One crew, one schedule, one company answering for the result.

Questions

Painting in Stow — common questions

How much does it cost to paint a house in Stow, MA?

There is no honest flat rate — the price turns on the size of the house, the condition of the existing paint and wood, and how much repair is needed underneath. In Stow the median home dates from 1975, and on a house of that age the prep is usually what moves the number rather than the square footage. What we promise is a free on-site visit and a written, itemized, fixed price you can compare line for line against any other quote.

Do you actually serve Stow?

Yes. Stow is about 10 miles from our shop in Northborough, which is normal working distance for us — regular scheduling, no travel surcharge, and we come back for touch-ups without making it a production.

Is lead paint likely in a Stow home?

Quite possibly — 58% of the housing in Stow was built before 1980, and federal law treats anything built before 1978 as lead-bearing. That means contained prep, HEPA extraction and wet methods instead of dry scraping. Ask any contractor bidding your job how they plan to handle it.

Question not here? Ask it on the phone.

Can you repair rotted wood on a Stow home, or just paint it?

We do both. EA Paint & Light Carpentry, Inc. is a painting and light carpentry company, so rotted sills, fascia, soffits, corner boards, clapboard and porch parts get replaced by the same crew, on the same estimate. You do not have to find a separate carpenter and wait.

Are you insured to work in Stow?

Yes. EA Paint & Light Carpentry, Inc. is a registered Massachusetts corporation carrying liability and workers' compensation insurance, and we send the certificate before the job starts.
