What we see on Newton houses
Newton has about 33,331 homes across 17.8 square miles of Middlesex County, and the median one was built in 1941. That makes it a largely pre-war city: clapboard and cedar shingle over old-growth framing, plaster walls on wood lath, and original single-glazed sash. 82% of the housing here went up before 1980 and 62% of the buildings are detached single-family homes.
On Newton houses that mostly means two things worth looking for: decades of paint built up into a brittle film that alligators and lets go in sheets, and end grain on porch columns and corner boards that has been drinking water for eighty years.

Lead paint and the age of Newton housing
Roughly 82% of Newton's homes predate 1980, so on most jobs here the age of the house decides how the work runs before anything else does. Federal law treats housing built before 1978 as lead-bearing, and disturbing paint in one means contained prep, HEPA extraction and wet methods rather than dry scraping. It is slower and it is not optional. Ask any contractor bidding your job how they intend to handle it — the answer tells you a great deal.
How far Newton is, and what that means
Newton is about 22.4 miles from Northborough — about an hour out. That is a normal working distance for us and it is free to have someone come and look. The crew is on site for a full day rather than dropping in, which suits whole rooms and whole elevations better than an hour of touch-up.
Why Newton homeowners hire one company for both
The single most common way an exterior job in Central Mass goes sideways is discovering rot after the staging is up. Then you are calling carpenters, waiting three weeks, paying two mobilization fees and watching the weather window close.
Because EA Paint & Light Carpentry, Inc. is set up for light carpentry as well as painting, that whole detour disappears. The soft sill, the split clapboard, the blown-out corner board — found at the estimate, priced at the estimate, repaired by the same crew that paints it.
One crew, one schedule, one company answering for the result.
